About the Authors

William Bernhard is Prof essor of Political Scienc e at the University

of Illinois. He earned h is Ph.D. from Duke Univer sity in 1996. His

work focuses primaril y on international polit ical economy, and his

recent publications include “Sovereign Debt, Migration Pressure, and

Political Survival” wi th David Leblang (2016. C omparative Political

Studies 49(7): 907–38) and “Br ussels Bound: Policy Exper ience and

Candidate Selection in European Elections” wit h Stephen Meserve

and Daniel Pemstein (2015. Comparative Political Studies 48(11):

1421–53).

Brenda Van Coppenolle is Assistant Professor in the Institute of Political

Scienceat Leiden University. She received her Ph.D. from LSE in 2014.

Her research focuses on political economy, electoral systems, political

dynasties, political selection and political careers. Her work has appeared

in Legislative Studies Quarterly.

Marcela Eslava is Professor of Economics at Universidad de Los Andes,

in Bogot

a, and a research aff‌iliate of IPA’s SME program. She holds a

Ph.D. degree from University of Maryland at College Park. Her current

research interests include the relationship between f‌irm dynamics and

regulations; the relationship between business growth and the evolution

of productivity versus demand at the f‌irm; the effect of credit constraints

on business performance and aggregate productivity, and the policy

alternatives to address f‌inancial restrictions to businesses. She has also

conducted research on the political economy of f‌iscal and monetary pol-

icy. Her work has been published in American Economic Review:

Papers & Proceedings, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Devel-

opment Economics, Review of Economic Dynamics, and Review of

Economics and Statistics, among others.
