About the Authors
Markus Baumann is a Doctoral Researcher at the Mannheim Centre for
European Social Research (MZES). His research focuses on legislative
decision making, parliamentary behavior, intra-party competition, and
political communication.

Daniel Butler is Associate Professor of Political Science at Washington
University in St. Louis. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University
in 2007. Butler’s research uses experiments to study issues of representa-
tion. He is author of Representing the Advantaged: How Politicians
Reinforce Inequality (Cambridge University 2014). His work has also
appeared in the American Journal of Political Science and the Journal
of Politics.

Marc Debus is Professor of Comparative Government at the University
of Mannheim, Germany. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from
the University of Konstanz, Germany in 2006. Debus’s research interests
include political institutions and their effects on the political process,
party competition and coalition politics, and political decision-making in
multi-level systems. His articles have appeared in the European Journal
of Political Research, Public Choice, European Union Politics, Party
Politics, Political Science Research and Methods, Political Research
Quarterly, Electoral Studies,andWest European Politics, among others.

David Doherty is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Loyola
University Chicago. His work examines the factors that shape citizen
responses to political events and politicians’ behavior. Doherty’s
previous work has appeared in outlets including the American Political
Science Review, Journal of Politics, Political Behavior,andPublic
Opinion Quarterly.
