About the Authors

Daniel Steiman is a PhD candidate and instructor in the Department

of Government, School of Public Affairs, American University.

He is also an adjunct instructor at George Mason University’s

Schar School of Policy and Government. His research focuses on

political violence and African politics, with an additional interest

in qualitative interview methods, including elite interviewing.

Elizabeth Suhay is Associate Professor and Graduate Program

Director in the Department of Government, School of Public

Affairs, American University. She studies U.S. politics with a focus

on mass and elite ideology, especially as they relate to economic

and scientific topics. She is the author or co-author of numerous

articles and coeditor of three edited volumes, most recently The

Politics of Truth in Polarized America (Oxford).

Miguel M. Pereira is an Assistant Professor of European Politics

at the London School of Economics. His research focuses on the

behavior of political elites in established democracies.

Pablo Fernandez-Vazquez is an Associate Professor at Carlos III

University. His main areas of interest include political representa-

tion, corruption, and political campaigns.

Gerald Gamm is Professor of Political Science and of History at

the University of Rochester, where he studies American legislative

institutions, political parties and the culture war. He is a recipi-

ent of the University of Rochester’s Goergen Award for under-

graduate education, he is a member of the City of Rochester’s

Preservation Board, he is an elected fellow of the Massachusetts

Historical Society, and he is a member of the Council of Scholars

of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society.

Thad Kousser is a Professor of Political Science and Co-Director

of the Yankelovich Center at UC San Diego, where he studies

American state and national politics. He has been a visiting pro-

fessor at Stanford University, a Flinders Fulbright Distinguished

Chair at Flinders University in Australia, received UCSD’s

Academic Senate’s Distinguished Teaching Award, served as co-

editor of the journals Legislative Studies Quarterly and State
