AHTNA DEVELOPMENT CORP.

Ahtna Development Corp. focuses its work on operations and maintenance, facilities management, information technology and records management. Ahtna Development also provides civil and environmental construction management services.

According to its Web site, Ahtna Development has been active in contracts and ventures throughout the United State to provide services such as road maintenance, remote camp construction, security, hotel and remote camp catering, janitorial maintenance, housekeeping and real estate management. In 1994, according to the Web site, Ahtna Development gained the Small Business Administration's 8(a) certification, allowing for greater opportunities to gain government contracts.

AHTNA GOVERNMENT SERVICES CORP.

Ahtna Government Services Corp. specializes in general construction, construction management, environmental restoration and compliance, demolition, marine services and facilities operations. Ahtna Services maintains seven offices in Alaska, California, Hawaii and Missouri, according to its Web site.

Ahtna Services' experience includes a range of projects, from maintenance dredging, civil construction, environmental engineering and personal services support at federal facilities. As a subsidiary of Ahtna Inc., the company has the ability to bond and insure various projects. Ahtna Services' primary customer has been the federal government, helping it to gain experience in executing indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contracts for a variety of tasks conducting environmental programs that involve multimedia contaminated site investigation and restoration.

WIRE-COMMUNICATIONS INC.

Wire-Communications Inc. specializes in installing and maintaining electrical and telecommunications systems. Work experience includes the installation of a new telephone and voice mail system for the Kanakanak Hospital in Dillingham, one of the company's largest projects. Here, the company tested and programmed more than 400 telephones and connected the communications platform to 27 outlying village clinics using voice-over-the-Internet technology through the data network. Wire-Comm also works with fiber optics, above- and below-ground cable installations, and equipment maintenance and relocations.

Wire-Comm crews also specialize in both indoor and outdoor electrical work. One example involved all aspects of electrical contracting for the Federal Express Sort Facility in Anchorage. Work included site lighting, fire alarms, auto sensor door controls and the installation of a standby power generator and switchgear.

The company was originally founded in 1968 by Hugh Smith and John Holloman. Under their direction, Wire-Comm installed most of the microwave communications systems involved with the North Slope oil fields and the telecommunications backbone along the trans-Alaska oil pipeline. The company sold to Newberry Energy in 1977. Ten years later, Smith's son, Ken, reestablished the company, which sold to Ahtna Inc. in 1999. Today, Wire-Comm is one of the few electrical contacting firms to hold state licenses for all categories in electrical and communications specialties.

The Aleut Corp. owns a 73 percent interest in the Alaska Trust Co., which provides trust and investment services. The company's target markets include wealthy nonresidents interested in taking advantage of the "favorable trust and estate legislation" passed into Alaska law in 1997 and 1998, according to the corporation's annual report. The company also targets Alaska residents who need traditional trust services and investment management, and helps with employee stock ownership plans. The company began operations in 1997, and according to the corporation's report, aims to expand into "the more lucrative investment management business for its growing list of trust clients." While the corporation owns a majority share of the Alaska Trust,it is only an investment and the corporation has no control over the company's operations, according to the annual report.

ALEUT ENTERPRISE CORP.

The Aleut Enterprise Corp. was formed to market potential economic growth on Adak Island, a former base of the U.S. Navy. Aleut Enterprise's parent company, Aleut Corp., has for several years worked with the U.S. Department of Interior to utilize land entitlements on Adak under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The corporation is working to acquire 46,000 acres on the island, an agreement that must be approved by the U.S. Congress Aleut Enterprise is working with the Adak Reuse Corp. and the Municipality of Adak to plan and develop economic growth on the island. The company began operations in 1998, and has since branched into fuel sales, port operations and the leasing of commercial and residential real property. Future business activities on Adak could include commercial fishing, port utilization, fuel terminaling and sales, airport utilization and the leasing of housing and commercial real estate.

SMI INTERNATIONAL CORP.

SMI International Corp. is involved in federal government logistics, communications, and base operations and maintenance contract work. SMI a has a communications division that offers services for the commercial sector. The company is invested in several subsidiaries of its own. SMI owns the Australia-based software company Eden Technology, and is involved in joint ventures for a commercial communications operation, and Internet-based call center and data management service company. SMI profited from federal contracts conducted throughout the United States, well as through software sales and maintenance contracts in New Zealand and Australia.

SMI also is invested in a joint venture with RAM Services Inc. and Homes and Narver Services Inc. to form the Combat Support Associates Joint Venture. This operation has been awarded a contract to perform base operation services to support U.S. Army efforts in Camp Doha, Kuwait. The company transitioned out of the SBA's 8(a) certification last year. It will continue to focus operations on communications, and on facility and base operations and support.
