9.1.3 Self-Disqualification

A judge may also recuse herself. Usually, a statute or rule allows for self-disqualification whenever "impartiality might reasonably be questioned."7 While a party may make a motion for recusal, such a motion is not necessary, and the judge may remove herself without input from either party.8 A number of reasons have been offered to support self-disqualification:

1. The judge has personal bias or prejudice concerning a party, or personal knowledge of disputed facts;
