Fresh out of college, Maurice Robinson had a dream-to be a publisher. He started in 1920 with a high-school newspaper, The Western Pennsylvania Scholastic, written from his mother's sewing room. Two years later, that magazine became The Scholastic, a national magazine for high-school students. It evolved into Senior Scholastic, Scholastic Update, and, in 1999, the The New York Times Upfront.
