8.4 INDEXES

An index is an alphabetical listing of names, places, subjects, or other information with an associated page or identifier as to where the information may be found. Indexes are found in treatises, looseleaf services, legal encyclopedias, and independently online. Journal indexes permit researchers to use their identified search terms/phrases or subject descriptors to narrowly search and easily retrieve articles that appear in journals, newsletters, and magazines. While full-text searching can be a powerful tool, it is also limited and can miss some key articles that are only available in print or behind a paywall. Additionally, indexes are routinely updated to reflect new subject areas, evolving language, and changes or updates to subject-matter classifications. Some general indexes of note are listed below.
