8.1 Introduction

The death of an employee as the result of a compensable accident or disease may give rise to three separate claims: (1) a claim for death compensation benefits; (2) a claim for burial expenses; and (3) a claim for the medical expenses incurred and compensation accrued by the employee before death.[1] An understanding of the differences between these kinds of claims and the persons who may bring them is essential.
