7.6 WHICH IRS TRANSCRIPTS TO OBTAIN?

Besides the sheer number and variety of transcripts used by the IRS, additional confusion is added by the fact that various individuals within the IRS, and even tax professionals outside the IRS, do not always agree on the names or designations of the respective transcripts. For example, the author has had some IRS employees outright deny that a "specific" transcript exists. Other IRS employees have insisted that the tax professional is only entitled to obtain transcripts for the last three tax years. Some tax professionals insist the specific transcript and the TXMOD are the same thing, when in fact they are not. And, some professionals are in the habit of simply requesting the "master file transcript" and can't tell you if what they are getting is the Account Transcript, the IMF Specific, the MFTRA-C, or the TXMOD.
