§ 6.7.7.1 Foreseeability. An employer's liability is limited by foreseeability. Some behavior engaged in by employees is outside the "zone of risk" and is deemed not to be foreseeable. In Kassman v. Busfield Enterprises, Inc.,⁴² the plaintiff brought suit for personal injuries, alleging negligent supervision and negligent hiring. He sought damages after he was shot by a doorman at a bar after the doorman had chased him and his friends. The employer had checked references on the doorman prior to this employment, and these references disclosed no prior problems that would have put the employer on notice. The doorman's job was relatively simple and required no special training. If any difficulties arose, he was instructed to contact the security guard. In addition, the record did not disclose any evidence showing that the doorman was known to be a vicious person when he was hired.
