6.4 PHOTO SPEED MONITORING DEVICES.

6.401 In General. In 2020, the General Assembly enacted section 46.2-882.1, authorizing the use of photo speed monitoring devices in or around school crossing zones, as defined in section 46.2-873(A), and highway work zones, as defined in section 46.2-878.1, for the purpose of recording images of vehicles that are traveling at speeds of at least 10 miles per hour above the posted school crossing zone or highway work zone speed limit.

"Photo speed monitoring device" means equipment that uses radar or LIDAR-based speed detection and produces one or more photographs, microphotographs, videotapes, or other recorded images of vehicles. ⁹ No calibration or testing of a photo speed monitoring device is valid for longer than 12 months. ¹⁰

A zone must be indicated by conspicuously placed signs displaying the maximum speed limit and stating that such photo speed monitoring devices are used in the area.
