§ 6.4.4.6 Causation. Although the Restatement favors a "substantial factor" test of causation in defamation,83 Arizona's current approved jury instructions require that the defamation be "a cause" of the injury with the qualification that "A defamatory statement causes damage if it helps produce the damage, and if the damage would not have happened without the defamatory statement."84
