1.. Hospitals
There should be little dispute that the ADA requires the provision of auxiliary aids and services to hospital patients.21 The accommodations required will likely depend upon the complexity of the communication. For example, an individual who is deaf or hard of hearing may need a qualified interpreter to discuss with hospital personnel a diagnosis, procedures, tests, treatment options, surgery or prescribed medications. In comparison, in situations that do not involve substantial conversation an exchange of written notes to achieve effective communication may be appropriate.22
