Most Roman gladiators were slaves forced to fight for sport all over the Empire. But what were their daily lives like? We now have a better idea, thanks to the discovery of an 1,800-year-old gladiator school. Archaeologists recently unearthed the remains of the two-story, 30,000-square-foot walled compound outside Vienna, Austria. The grounds dating from the second century A.D. resembled a fortress prison and held at least 80 gladiators who slept in 32-square-foot cells during their year-round training there.
