§ 5.2 Traditional (or "Genetic") Surrogacy

A traditional or genetic surrogate is a surrogate who becomes pregnant through intrauterine insemination with the sperm of a man who is not her husband.⁵ Alternatively, her eggs could be retrieved, fertilized in vitro, and then the resulting embryos implanted in her uterus. If the sperm fertilizes the surrogate's ovum or implantation of the embryo occurs, a pregnancy results, and the resulting child is the biological product of the male contributor and the surrogate. The parties who intend to parent the resulting child are known as the "intended parents" regardless of their genetic connection to the child. Traditional surrogacy is favored by some couples because it often a less expensive alternative that still enables an intended parent to have a genetic connection to the child.
