The Top 49ers: The State's Most Successful Alaskan-Owned Businesses.

PositionIndustry Overview - Statistical Data Included

Every October Alaska Business Monthly salutes the top 49 Alaskan-owned and -operated businesses in the state, based on gross revenues for the previous year. This year--the 16th for putting together this prestigious listing--is no different.

This is the sixth consecutive year Arctic Slope Regional Corp. has topped the listing. With 1999 gross revenues of $885.47 million, down 0.23 percent from last year's $887.51 million, the organization is impressive indeed.

Ranking second is Lynden Inc. with 1999 gross revenues of $330 million, an increase of 7.58 percent over 1998's totals. Lynden Inc. moved from its long-held third-place position to beat out VECO Alaska Inc. VECO, with 1999 gross revenues of $305 million, saw a decrease in revenues of 3.61 percent, dropping it to the third place position. VECO had held the second place position for five consecutive years, and before that ranked number one for two years.

There are many new faces to the 2000 Top 49ers listing. Those who made the ranks for the first time are Alcan Electrical and Engineering Inc., Allen and Petersen Co., Central Peninsula General Hospital, Eero Volkswagen of Anchorage Inc., Fairbanks Nissan, Goldbelt Inc., Koniag Inc., Peak Oilfield Services Co. and Wave Wholesale Co.

Peak Oilfield Services Co. and Wave Wholesale Co. are both subsidiaries of Native corporations. Wave Wholesale is a subsidiary of Calista Corp., which did not qualify this year based on its 1999 revenues of $10.9 million. Peak Oilfield Services Co. is a subsidiary of Cook Inlet Region Inc., which boasted 1999 revenues of $297 million, exclusive of those created by Peak Oilfield.

Native organizations by far dominate this listing. Fourteen of the Top 49ers are grouped in this category: Goldbelt Inc., Klukwan Inc., Ukpeagvik Inupiat Corp. Wave Wholesale Co., Ahtna Inc., Arctic Slope Regional Corp., Bristol Bay Native Corp., Chugach Alaska Corp., Cook Inlet Region Inc., Doyon Ltd., Koniag Inc., NANA Regional Corp., Sealaska Corp. and The Aleut Corp. These organizations provide about 13,470 jobs and brought in total 1999 gross revenues of about $2.2 billion.

The retail/trade and construction industries are also well represented on this listing. There were 11 businesses that ranked in retail/trade, creating 1,476 jobs and showing 1999 combined revenues of $421 million. Eight businesses on the listing are in the construction industry, providing 4,671 jobs and showing 1999 combined revenues of more than $556 million.

Organizations showing the most growth include Ahtna Inc., Koniag Inc., McKinley Capital Management Inc., NANA Regional Corp., Nesser Construction, Northrim Bank and Wave Wholesale (again showing the strength of our Native corporations). Ahtna Inc. had a 45.26 percent increase in revenues from 1998 to 1999. Koniag Inc.'s increase in revenues from 1998 to 1999 was 52.55 percent. McKinley Capital Management had a 37.98 percent increase in revenue for the same time period. NANA Regional Corp. showed a 51.59 percent increase. Nesser Construction and Northrim Bank both saw increases in revenue of nearly 36 percent. And Wave Wholesale Co. saw 68.44 percent growth in revenues from 1998 to 1999.

Unfortunately, some corporations fell from the listing that had made it in previous years. There could be several reasons for these changes. The organizations may not have chosen to participate in the survey this year or refused to provide revenue information. Some, however, did not bring in enough revenue during 1999 to qualify. Those dropping from the 49ers in 2000 that were represented last year include Alaska Sales & Service Inc., Alcan General Inc., Gaston & Associates Inc., Hames Corp., Hickel Investment Co. and Inlet Fisheries Inc./Inlet Salmon.

The businesses that comprise this list deserve praise for their contributions to Alaska. They provide more than jobs and revenue for the state. They represent an elite group of corporations that work hard in their commitment to Alaska and its people. Alaska Business Monthly will honor the Top 49ers at a special Chamber luncheon on Oct. 2. at the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel.
