3.4 UPDATING
3.401 Shepard's Virginia Citations.
A. Generally. Shepard's has been an integral part of the legal research process since 1873. The act of updating a legal authority is sometimes referred to as "shepardizing." Shepard's Virginia Citations provides a listing of all authorities citing to a particular case or statute. This includes status information on each section of the code and a listing of cases and secondary sources that cite or apply the code section. In addition to covering Virginia legal content, Shepard's Virginia Citations lists Virginia citations to the United States Constitution, the United States Code, Statutes at Large, federal rules of court, and the federal sentencing guidelines.
A LexisNexis product, Shepard's is available in print and online through Lexis. Accessing Shepard's online will reflect the most recent citation information available.
