22.18 Firefighter’s Rule. Arizona has adopted the firefighter’s rule, which limits the rescue doctrine by prohibiting a firefighter who is injured in the line of duty from suing those whose negligence helped create the fire.¹⁸⁶ This rule also applies to police officers.¹⁸⁷ The firefighter’s rule has some exceptions. First, the rule does not apply to situations where a third party has been independently negligent, which is to say that the conduct is unrelated to the reason why the policeman or firefighter is at the scene.¹⁸⁸ Second, the rule does not apply in non-emergency situations like building inspections.¹⁸⁹
