22.13 Machinery. Liability may also lie for injuries caused by machines on a landowner’s premises. The doctrine of res ipsa loquitur, for example, has been applied to infer a landowner’s negligence for a woman’s injuries sustained by a closing elevator door, even though the elevator was manufactured and serviced by another party.¹⁴¹ Similarly, a store could be liable for unsafe shopping carts as a result of its duty to keep the premises safe.¹⁴²
