22.10 Ingress/Egress. The duty to keep premises in a reasonably safe condition includes the duty to provide safe ingress and egress.132 This is not, however, the duty to make safe the shortest path; an invitee can leave his or her “area of invitation” by taking shortcuts, such as through planters, in which a landowner owes the invitee no duty of reasonable care.133
The duty to invitees can extend beyond the premises: for example, a warehouse which did not provide a parking spot for a truck driver could be liable for injuries he sustained in an automobile accident...
