2022 Workers' Compensation Special Recognition Awards

The Workers' Compensation section of the California Lawyers Association is honoring five exceptional members of the community for their contributions to the workers' compensation system. The 2022 Workers' Compensation Special Recognition Awards were presented at a reception on Friday, September 16, 2022, in conjunction with the CLA Annual Meeting held in San Diego.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD ALFONSO MORESI, RET. SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA

Alfonso Moresi was born, raised, educated and spent his whole life in San Francisco. After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of San Francisco in 1968, he took a year off to ski before enrolling at Golden Gate University Law School, from which he graduated in May of 1972. He was admitted to the Bar in November of that year.

Mr. Moresi's first job as a lawyer was with Employers Insurance of Wausau, beginning in February of 1973. A year later he moved on to Continental Insurance Company.

In 1975 he was recruited by Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold to work in their workers' compensation department. In 1985, he, along with Mike Laughlin, Gerald Falbo, Roger Levy and John Bennett formed the firm of Laughlin, Falbo, Levy & Moresi. Mr. Moresi stayed with the firm until his appointment to the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board by Governor Schwarzenegger in April of 2007. When his term as a commissioner expired in April of 2014, he returned to Laughlin, Falbo in an of-counsel capacity before retiring from active practice in December of 2015.

Since retiring, Mr. Moresi has remained active, acting as an arbitrator and mediator for carve-outs and various carriers and applicant attorneys.

JUDGE OF THE YEAR CHRISTOPHER MILLER WORKERS' COMPENSATION JUDGE OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA

Judge Miller began practicing in the workers' compensation system in 1989. He represented injured workers, and a couple of workers who might not have been injured, for 15 years, as a member of a small firm that he led for the second half of that time. In 2004 he went to work as a judge in the Oakland District Office, in time to help roll out the miracle of EAMS and see the judges at that office replaced by the current excellent crew. Judge Miller sometimes speaks publicly, both viva voce and under his breath, and writes about workers' compensation matters.
