2015 New Matter Author Submission Guidelines

Articles should be on topics of interest to a significant number of IP lawyers and in the range of 1500-5000 words long. Acceptable types of articles include reasoned opinion, practice tips, and scholarly analysis. The articles must be within the bounds of good taste and must have accurate references, using Harvard Bluebook formatting. Acceptance of the article will depend on whether the article fits in with the overall coverage and topics of other articles, timeliness, editorial schedule, etc.
Contact the Acquisition Editor to discuss whether your topic fits New Matter editorial policy, is a good fit for the issue with regard to topic, and is timely submitted. By way of example, a recent case analysis and discussion article may have already been accepted by another author.
Authors are encouraged to summarize the article in the initial paragraphs, focusing on the importance of the topic and issue, and the scope of what will be covered. You should also make use of headings to emphasize the main issues and key contours of the article. Most readers welcome a roadmap and highway markers.
Provide a final copy to the Acquisitions Editor in Microsoft Word format.
Authors should avoid submitting low-resolution graphics or documents in pdf format. All charts, graphs and images ("graphics") should be preferably be provided as separate grayscale, TIFF-formatted (or high-resolution JPEG) graphics. Images created using Adobe's Photoshop®, for example, are generally acceptable. It is the author's responsibility to present graphics in a format which ensures its acceptability for publication. Generally, they should be at least 1MB in original size. Graphics downloaded from third-party sources such as the internet or originally taken or generated with a low resolution or small digital size (e.g., 32-164kb) may result in unacceptable image, in addition to presenting other issues. All such items must also comply with applicable State Bar accessibility guidelines. For example, a brief verbal description or alternative text may be needed for the graphic.
Citations should be in ENDNOTE format. New Matter does not use footnotes, nor does it publish embedded citations (where the full cite appears within the text of the article). Instead, all citations must appear at the end of the article. All...
