In and Around the Bar Colorado Bar Foundation

The Colorado Bar Foundation was established in 1953 by members of the Colorado Bar Association (CBA). It functions exclusively for educational and charitable purposes and is an organization qualifying under § 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Foundation promotes the advancement of jurisprudence and the administration of justice in Colorado through grants to help educate the general public, and to provide assistance to the state’s legal institutions. The Foundation is the grant-making arm of the CBA.

All CBA members are members of the Foundation. The Foundation is governed by a fifteen-member Board of Trustees appointed by the CBA Board of Governors. Foundation Board members serve a term of three years, without term hmitations. The Trustees meet quarterly to govern the business affairs of the Foundation. AnnuaUy, the Trustees review grant requests and distribute funds to worthy causes in support of the Foundation's granting policies. The 2013 Trustees are: Chair Barbara Blumenthal, Denver; Vice Chair, Dave Stevens, Littleton; Treasurer John Vaught, Denver; Bar Fellows President David Wood, Fort Collins; Meredith Cord, Colorado Springs; Charley Garcia, Denver; Dick Hart, Carbondale; Leslie Lawson, Denver; Bart Mendenhall, Rocky Ford; Terry Ruckriegle, Breckenridge; Dick Scheurer, Evergreen; Kathy Seidel, Denver; Ron Servis, Lakewood; Chuck Turner, Denver; and Connie Wood, Denver.

Financial support for the Foundation comes from several 'Sources. Voluntary contributions are solicited from CBA members along with the annual dues. Memorial contributions for deceased lawyers, friends, and family are welcome. Bequests are made to the Foundation in wills. Special gifts may be made in any amount.

In the fall of 2004, former CBA President Bennett S. Aisenberg donated a $10, 000 unrestricted gift to the Foundation. In recognition of this gesture, the Board of Trustees created a special category of donors, the Aisenberg Society. Members of the Aisenberg Society donate $10, 000 to the Foundation during a lifetime of giving, and are recognized at the annual Bar Fellows Dinner. In addition, member names are engraved on a plaque housed at the Foundation offices.

The primary source of endowment funding, however, is derived from the Colorado Bar Fellows and their annual contributions. The Colorado Bar Fellows came into existence in 1977. With a program patterned after the American Bar Fellows, the Colorado Bar Fellows are selected and honored at the annual dinner. Bar Fellows are members in good standing of the CBA who have been recommended by their colleagues. These lawyers have been selected because of their outstanding contributions to their communities.

New members pledge $2, 000 toward the Foundation's endowment, to be paid in ten equal annual installments. All contributions are tax deductible. On completion of the financial commitment, a member becomes a FeWowEmeritus. Although these members are exempt from making a mandatory annual contribution, most continue to contribute to the activities of the Foundation.

Contributors to the Colorado Bar Foundation may be assured that donations will help to fund a strong, concerned, and progressive charity that is dedicated to assisting and promoting the justice system in Colorado. In the past thirty-one years of grant giving, the Foundation has awarded $1, 396, 479. The list of 2012 grant recipients appears immediately following the list of Colorado Bar Association Fellows.
