William M. Burke III

Bill Burke and I met nearly forty years ago when we were assigned to the same first-year section at Harvard Law School. We became good friends even though our backgrounds were quite different.

Bill was from West Virginia; I was from New York. After high school, Bill served in the Air Force. He graduated from UCLA with a degree in astronautical engineering. Before and during law school, he worked for NASA and MIT. I graduated from Cornell with a degree in government. I served as a Peace Corps volunteer after college.

After graduating from law school in 1974, Bill moved to Colorado; I moved here the following year. We maintained our friendship, even though our career paths diverged-Bill worked as a corporate lawyer and I as a legal services lawyer and then a judge. After working for Holland and Hart for three years, he became a solo practitioner.

Bill always seemed to have a smile on his face. His unassuming manner belied the depth and breadth of his knowledge about both legal and other topics. Among other interests, Bill enjoyed reading, mathematics, and South...
