Senior Law Day Recipient of Community and Educational Outreach Award

The National Association of Bar Executives has named the CBA Senior Law Day program the 2011 recipient of the LexisNexis Community and Educational Outreach Award. The award is presented annually to honor bar associations that regularly perform outstanding public service or present law-related public education.

Senior Law Day is a free, annual event featuring a variety of workshops that address legal and other issues specific to the aging population. The workshops are presentedby attorneys and other professionals in the field of elder care, and are designed for seniors, their adult children, and caregivers. Among topics addressed are: Medicare, Medicaid, estate planning, assisted living, guardianship for adults, lifelong learning and the aging brain, and benefits for veterans.

The University of Denver (DU) Sturm College of Law started the program in Denver in 1999. This year, it is being held in several locations around the state, including Boulder County (August 13); Denver County (July 23); and Larimer County (August 13). CBA Board of Governors Spring Meeting

The CBA Board of Governors (BOG) convened for its quarterly meeting on Saturday, May 8, at the DU Sturm College of Law. During the meeting, the BOG considered proposals and recommendations from several CBA sections and committees. Among the items approved were the CBA Budget Committee's 2011-12 proposed budget; the CBA Membership Committee's recommendation not to extend beyond six months the free membership for new attorneys; and the creation of a bylaw amendment making COBALT, the CBA's leadership training program, a standing committee. The BOG also held a strategic break-out session focused on mentoring. U.S. Representative Ed Perlmutter was present at the meeting and received appreciation from the BOG for his work to retain funding for legal services in Colorado. The complete agenda can be found at www.cobar.org/repository/Inside_Bar/Governance/BOG%205_08_10.pdf. Minutes will be posted to the CBA website following their approval at the BOG's fall meeting.

Glenwood Springs High School Places Third at National Mock Trial Tournament

Glenwood Springs High School's mock trial team finished in third place at the National High School Mock Trial Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona. The team competed against forty-seven teams from forty-three states, Guam, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, South Korea, and Australia. To advance to the national tournament, the Glenwood team competed against Lakewood High School, winning the Colorado State Mock Trial Tournament. This is the fifth time in ten years that a team from Glenwood Springs has competed in the national tournament. A Colorado team last won the National Championship title in 1990.

Students on the Glenwood team were Erica Arensman, Christian Bergren-Aragon, Isaac Carlson, Isabel Carlson, Joseph Ciborowski, Grace Gamba, Eileen Klomhaus, Alex Pototsky, and Hope Whitman. Bergren-Aragon and Pototsky also won individual awards for Best Attorney and Best Witness, respectively. Coaches were Charlie Willman (head coach); Wes Burke and Vic Zerbi (assistant attorney coaches); and Bryan Gonzales (teacher coach).

The case at nationals focused on a dispute in northern Arizona between a Native American tribe and a uranium mining company. The dispute was whether the expansion of the mining operations would impact the water and wildlife on the land and would significantly impact the public health and safety of the native residents. Teams competing at nationals had one month to prepare their case. They were judged on how well they knew the case, questioned witnesses, advocated their side of the case, and made and responded to objections.

The national tournament took place from May 5 to 7. The awards banquet was held in the Sandra Day O'Connor District Courthouse. The former U.S. Supreme Court Justice attended the banquet and made opening statements.
