Five of the Greatest

Royal C. Rubright

by Charlton H. Carpenter

About the Author

Charlton H. Carpenter graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Colorado School of Law. He was admitted to the Colorado Bar in 1964. After clerking for Chief Judge Alfred A. Arraj of the U.S. District Court, he came to Fairfield and Woods in 1965, where he remains today, practicing primarily in the real estate and corporate areas. He is a member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and the American College of Mortgage Attorneys.

If ever there was a person who was deserving of his name, it was Royal C. Rubright. Personally and professionally, he was the epitome of "noble" and "dignified." Royal Rubright was a brilliant attorney whose practical approach and winning ways made people like him immediately on first meeting, and his intelligence and hard work made him a leader in the profession and someone to emulate. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and the good friend of many. He was a talented photographer and, above all, was considered by his colleagues as the "dean" of the Colorado real estate bar.

Family and Friends

In addition to being a consummate real estate attorney for many years, Royal C. Rubright was a devoted family man. He was loved and respected by family and friends alike.

According to his daughter, Lynnell Rubright, he was a man without vices. His only two idiosyncracies were that he tried to fix everything with duct tape-but was rarely successful-and he had a tremendous sweet tooth. As Lynnell tells it:

He loved candy, and having grown up with two younger brothers, he learned that you had to get the candy first if you were going to get any. My mother would buy candy in advance for a dinner party and would try to hide it where he wouldn't find it. It never worked. When she came to get the box, it would be right where she put it, and all the little papers inside would be perfectly in place-there just wouldn't be any candy in them. He would hang his head and look sheepish when he was caught, but he never reformed.(fn1)

Lynnell shared many fond memories of her father for this profile. She recalled:

I was always proud of his unflinching integrity. He was honest down to the smallest details. For example, when eating in a restaurant, he always checked the bill. More than once he found that the waitress had not charged us enough. He always brought it to her attention. He also always tried to get the name of the waitress and called her by name. He was kind and respectful to everyone. A friend said to me recently, "If there had been more Royal Rubrights, there wouldn't be any lawyer jokes. . . ."

One thing that mother and I always laughed about was how many people he knew-mostly lawyers. We couldn't go anywhere that we didn't find someone who knew him. One time on vacation in South Carolina, we walked into a rural restaurant for breakfast and mother said something to the effect that maybe now we were far enough away so that no one would know daddy. When we walked in, a voice from one of the tables said, "Well, if it isn't Roy Rubright." Another time, when my dad, stepmom, and I were out in the jeep a long way off the beaten path taking aspen pictures, we were not finding a little road shown on the map that we wanted to take. Dad suggested that we pull into a nearby ranch and ask about it, so I did. When I walked up to the rancher, he demanded rather gruffly, "Who is that man with you?" I answered that it was my father. He asked, "What's his name?" More than a little surprised at the questions, I responded, "Royal Rubright." To that the rancher replied, "Hell, I've known Roy Rubright for forty years!" It was like that everywhere.
