Dear Mr. Low:
I currently practice law in Michigan, but am a member of the
Colorado Bar, as well (inactive status). I am not always
blessed with time to peruse the CBA journal but did this
month, and took in your delightful article, "Clearly and
Manifestly."(fn1) Even after twenty-eight years of trial
practice, it's nice to have gentle and relevant reminders
that old dogs can (and should) be open to revisiting the
basics. Good advice, well-spoken. Thanks for sharing

Dear Mr. Gibbard:
I read with interest your article "When Doves
Died."(fn1) You may not be aware, but many bird-dog
trainers use live pigeons and quail in traps. Trainers use
these animals to train dogs to point, hold, and retrieve
downed (shot) game.
Moreover, in Colorado, "canned hunt" opportunities
abound. A sportsman pays to shoot recently released and
relatively tame birds pre-placed for maximum shooting
enjoyment. Assuming people follow regulatory law, the
Colorado Department of Wildlife (DOW) licenses the killing of
farm-raised (gooney) birds. As one example, please review the
DOW regulations regarding dog trials and field training.(fn2)
So, who trumps whom? With the possible exception of Boulder
County (I know, I know, cheap shot), I cannot imagine a
district attorney going after sportsmen training their dogs.
My point, though I've taken some time getting there, is
that there is a more direct analogy to the Frank Waters
matter(fn3) than hunting. Indeed, dog trials and canned hunts
are almost directly analogous. This is an emerging area of
