The American Dream - Justice for All

If you are reading this month's column, you obviously have survived the perils of April 15 - not that the dread of paying what you owe for last year's taxes, plus paying your first quarter estimate for this year, hangs heavy over any of the readers of this column. May is a busy month for everyone. Law Day is here; graduation may be pending for children, grandchildren, and law students; the CBA Board of Governors will meet on May 17 (a report of the meeting will appear online at www.cobar.org and will be printed in a future issue of The Colorado Lawyer); the 2008 session of the Colorado Legislature ends in May; and the Memorial Day holiday closes out the month

Our Courts and the Rule of Law

The Colorado Our Courts program continues to draw positive response from those who have participated in and attended the presentations. To date, approximately 1,700 people have attended the Our Courts presentations that deal with Colorado courts. In keeping with the 2008 Law Day theme of "The Rule of Law," Colorado's Our Courts program is launching a second presentation, which also will be available on an ongoing basis. Helping the electorate understand the significance of the Rule of Law is critical to protecting fair and impartial courts from attacks. The Rule of Law is the foundation of every society that truly values freedom and human rights There are many forms of government in which the society places value on freedom and human rights and whose underlying principal is the Rule of Law. Countries and societies that suffer from tyranny, anarchy, and genocide don't evidence a belief in and respect for the Rule of Law.
