Colleagues Welcomed ABA President-Elect Karen Mathis at Reception in September

In July 2006, Karen J. Mathis will become the first Coloradan - and only the third woman - to serve as President of the American Bar Association ("ABA"). As a tribute to her achievement, the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations, along with the Colorado Women's Bar Association, held a reception for Mathis at the CBA offices on September 13, 2005. More than 200 colleagues and friends attended the event.

Among the attendees were current CBA President Roger Clark (at left with Mathis); CBA President-Elect Liz Starrs; former CBA President Dale Harris (in photo above right); DBA President Chris Little; Janet Drake, President of the Women's Bar Association; Constance Talmage, President of the Women's Bar Association Foundation; and attorney Kathy Odle, who proudly refers to Mathis as her mentor for several years. Many local judges also were in attendance.

Mathis spoke to attendees about the two priority issues of her tenure as ABA President: devising programs for "second-season" lawyers and leading the support of programs on behalf of youth at risk in the United States. She briefly described her intention to provide information to and create programs for attorneys who may be ready to retire from the full-time practice of law but wish to remain active in the professional community. The programs will facilitate these "second-season" attorneys in their transition and provide constructive and fulfilling options.

The topic of youth at risk in the United States is another issue that Mathis intends to focus on during her ABA Presidency. She will promote and support programs that address the issue and work toward correcting the country-wide problem.

Tomboy Tools Hit the Nail on the Head

The CBA staff went back to Shop Class 101 on August 26, 2005, when Julie Faulkner (pictured at left), a representative from Tomboy Tools, paid the office a lunch-time visit. Faulkner gave full demonstrations of some of Tomboy's most popular tools, including the "Picture-Perfect Level," a nine-inch caulking gun, the Auto Kit, and a magnetic-head hammer. She also demonstrated how to fix the toilet that just won't stop running.

Tomboy Tools was founded three years ago by three women who wanted to create "more efficient and practical tools." Some of their practical creations are the fractional tape measure, with printed fractions instead of hash marks, and a multi-bit ratchet screwdriver that has a smaller grip (bits are stored in the handle). The Picture-Perfect Level was a favorite among the staff. It creates precise measuring for hanging pictures, shelves, and towel racks. These women really hit the nail on the head!
