Former Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Edward
"Eddie" E. Pringle died March 1, 2002. He was 87
Pringle was born in 1914 and moved to Denver at the age of 3
He attended North High School, graduating at 16. He attended
the University of Colorado in Boulder where he received a law
degree at the age of 22. Pringle was a lawyer, a judge, and a
teacher. He practiced law in Denver for twelve years. He was
appointed to the Denver District Court bench in 1958 and then
to the Colorado Supreme Court in 1961. He served as Chief
Justice for nine of the eighteen years he was on the Supreme
Court bench. As Chief Justice, Pringle was the driving force
behind an overhaul of the state's judicial system. He
unified the courts' budgets, making the Chief Justice the
head budgetmaker. He was the first Colorado Chief Justice to
make a "State of the Courts" address to the
legislature; established a state-sponsored marriage
counseling service; helped get the current judicial building
built; and became one of the first justices in the nation to
argue for allowing cameras in the courtroom. Pringle taught
at the University of Denver College of Law for eighteen
years, until he retired in 1997. He joined the Colorado and
