As my term in office passes the half-way mark, I thought it might be helpful give you my perspective on how things have been going with Colorado Bar Association programs and concerns.
The year's theme of professionalism has been met with a great deal of enthusiasm throughout the state. My wife Pat and I, along with President-Elect Wiley Daniel and his wife Ida, have visited twenty-six of the twenty-eight local bar associations. Throughout our visits, we have been accorded great warmth and courtesy; it certainly has given us a better idea of how local lawyers feel about the Colorado Bar Association. More specifically, the concerns about professionalism and the tremendous pressures that lawyers feel they are under are shared almost universally.
Professionalism means different things to different lawyers, but we know a lawyer who exhibits professionalism when we see one. Such a lawyer has high lawyering skills, a well-defined sense of professional courtesy, a view of the "big picture" in problem-solving and a strong community responsibility.
The following lawyers were selected by their bar associations to receive the CBA President's Award for Outstanding Professionalism:
