First Judicial District Bicentennial Events

The First Judicial District Bicentennial Network, under the leadership of Mark Williams, attorney, and Ruthanne N. Polidori, District Court Judge, has been extremely active in promoting the celebration of the Bicentennial. The Network is composed of many local civic and educational leaders, and the First Judicial District has been recognized as an official Bicentennial community.

Several local communities within the First Judicial District, through the encouragement of Bicentennial Network members, had their own individual celebrations. Network member Joseph Studholm, Lakewood Municipal Judge, was instrumental in having the City of Lakewood use "We the People" as a theme for its annual Lakewood on Parade celebration and parade. The Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution was emphasized in the entire celebration, and the floats in the parade were awarded prizes for the best depiction of the "We the People" theme. Network member Brett Brough, a member of the City of Edgewater City Council, had included a Bicentennial program in the annual Edgewater Days celebration.

Network member Jack Van Ens, the pastor of Arvada Presbyterian Church, developed a celebration which included both his church and the entire Arvada community. The celebration, which took place Sunday, September 20, involved church services in the morning featuring a sermon on the Constitution and a program of patriotic church music. That evening, the entire Arvada community attended a program hosted at the church which included addresses on the Constitution by the Arvada Mayor, Arvada Police Chief and other community leaders; and a patriotic music presentation by Arvada High School which included singing by the audience of traditional patriotic songs.

Dr. David Nelson, another Network member and a professor at Red Rocks Community College, was involved in creating two excellent programs at the school. The first was a two-day celebration of the Constitution, which took place on the Red Rocks campus. The entire Jefferson County community was invited to the celebration, which included speakers on various constitutional subjects as well as American folk music and drama.
