The Colorado Lawyer Trust Account Foundation ("COLTAF") has exceeded the half million dollar mark in its distribution of grants to numerous Colorado legal programs. The latest grant disbursement of $175,000 pushed COLTAF's total grants to $630,000. COLTAF's funds are offered to programs which meet one or more of the following purposes:
---Assist in providing legal services to the disadvantaged;
---Improve the delivery of legal services;
---Promote knowledge and awareness of the law; and,
---Improve the administration of justice.
The Foundation was established in 1982 to raise funds from the interest earned on qualifying client trust accounts which are nominal in amount or short-term. Such accounts may be maintained in interest-bearing accounts at the attorney's current financial institution. The bank or savings and loan regularly remits any interest earned on the designated account directly to COLTAF.
COLTAF makes grants twice yearly. The January disbursements support the legal services offices and the local bar association pro bono programs. The July grants fund the legal services offices and "discretionary programs" which meet the above stated purposes. The July 1986 grant recipients are as follows:
Legal Aid Society of Metropolitan Denver $65,800
