Pro Bono Month: September Activities

Governor Richard D. Lamm has proclaimed September to be Pro Bono Month. The Executive Order reads as follows
EXECUTIVE ORDER
PROCLAMATION
PRO BONO MONTH
September 1985

WHEREAS, volunteerism is a valuable resource in Colorado; and

WHEREAS, Colorado attorneys have an ethical obligation to serve the disadvantaged; and

WHEREAS, the state and local bar associations in Colorado are nationally known as leaders in pro bono promotion; and

WHEREAS, the resources of the legal services programs providing civil legal assistance to the poor are diminishing; and

WHEREAS, the disadvantaged residents of our state deserve equal access to justice; and

WHEREAS, state and local bar associations are planning to celebrate Pro Bono Month throughout the state;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Richard D. Lamm, Governor of the State of Colorado, do hereby proclaim September 1985, as

PRO BONO MONTH

in the State of Colorado.

GIVEN under my hand and the Executive Seal of the State of Colorado, this twelfth day of August, A.D. 1985.

A special statewide effort is being made as part of Colorado's celebration of Pro Bono Month. Pro bono publico means "for the good of the public." Attorneys throughout the state have donated thousands of hours of professional legal counsel to low-income residents who were unable to pay for legal services. More than 3,500 lawyers participated in volunteer legal services programs in colorado this year. Lawyers also contribute time to public information and educational programs. Current Community Volunteer Services include:

Pro bono referral panels throughout the state which assist clients with civil problems.

Pro Se (do it yourself) clinics for the dissolution of marriage, small claims court and collections.

Community legal education programs.

The Legal Aid Foundation and the Colorado Lawyer Trust Account Foundation, both of which raise funds that support various law-related programs in the state.

Pro Bono Month is a time to make the public more aware of the special services that are available to them and to recognize those lawyers who make these services possible.
