CBA/COLTAF Grants Fund Pro Bono Programs

A total of $30,000 in grants have been allocated to ten local bar associations by the Colorado Bar Association ("CBA") and the Colorado Lawyer Trust Account Foundation ("COLTAF"). The CBA and COLTAF each provided $15,000 in funding for local pro bono programs.

Interested bar associations submitted grant proposals detailing their intended projects for review by a joint committee set up by the CBA and COLTAF. The committee was composed of three members: Frank Plaut, COLTAF Grants Committee Chairman; Jim Moran, CBA President-Elect; and Jane Gill, CBA Director of Legal Services and Secretary of the COLTAF Board of Directors.

The committee was able to provide funding for each of the bar associations that applied for grants. The following are the proposed projects and grant amounts:

Boulder County, $2,400: To produce a radio series entitled "The Greenstein Forum," covering such issues as current U.S. Supreme Court decisions, the criminal justice system, child abuse, the judiciary, alternatives to dispute resolution, legal ethics and business and the law.

Delta County, $2,000: For contract attorneys to assist local residents with civil legal matters and administrative program costs.

El Paso County, $1,500: To assist in the production of an educational television program aired four times per year, entitled "Ask-a-Lawyer," which discusses current legal issues with a public call-in question segment.

Eleventh Judicial District, $1,000: To fund a toll-free telephone number to provide residents with a legal referral service and to cover costs of printing and mailing self-help materials.

First Judicial District, $2,000: To fund pro se dissolution of marriage clinics for low-income residents of Jefferson County.

Logan County, $1,500: To help fund a legal services office that refers residents to appropriate agencies or attorneys for representation and offers pro se dissolution of marriage and small claims court instruction.

Mesa County, $5,000: To help supplement an ABA grant for Mesa County Legal Services that refers low-income residents to appropriate attorneys for low fee or free services.
