The University of Denver Law Center: A New Home and A New Concept

by Dean Daniel S. Hoffman

DU College of Law

Chancellor Ross Pritchard called me the day after Thanksgiving, 1981. He asked me to meet him at the Colorado Women's College campus. We were joined by Board President Lucien Wulsin and Associate Dean John C. Hanley. It was not hard to guess the purpose of the meeting. The scuttlebutt was that the University was interested in acquiring the beautiful, thirty-four acre CWC campus, located a couple of minutes away from Stapleton International Airport. The overcrowded College of Law was a likely candidate to be relocated to the campus.

Now, a year later, the University of Denver Law Center at the former CWC campus is on its way to becoming an exciting reality. Bulldozers are digging the foundation for the new Lowell Thomas Law Building, named in honor of a major benefactor of the College of Law. The move is scheduled for late 1983.

During the intervening year, the University negotiated the contract for the purchase of the campus, went through an intense planning process, selected an architect and contractor and sought necessary financing. There will be approximately 50,000 additional square feet of renovation in two existing buildings. Porter Library will be renovated to house the College of Law administration, smaller classrooms, law journals, student study areas, the Advocacy Skills Program and placements, alumni and development functions. Mason Hall will be renovated to accommodate student lounge...
