The representation of lawyers in the Colorado General Assembly will remain small in the next two years, regardless of what happens in the primary and general elections this fall.
Lawyers numbered only 14 among 100 legislators in 1978---7 in the Senate and 7 in the House. There will be no more than 16 when the next General Assembly convenes and there could be even fewer than that.
Of 160 candidates on the legislative primary ballot this fall, only 13 are lawyers. Only one lawyer is running for a seat in the Senate, so the Senate representation, including the 4 lawyer holdovers, could be no higher than 5 of 35, if this one lawyer is elected.
Of 12 lawyers running for House seats, two oppose each other; so the maximum number of lawyer House members would be 11 of 65.
These figures contrast sharply with the popular impression that lawyers dominate the Legislature and are primarily responsible for whatever the Legislature perpetrates. The small number of lawyers suggests both a shortage of legal expertise on legislative matters and perhaps a shortage of informed support for positions advocated by the legal profession.
Following is a list of the 13 lawyers whose names will be on the primary ballot. The asterisks indicate those who will be unopposed in November.
