The $85 Divorce Decision

In the February 1977 Family Law Newsletter (Vol. 6, No. 2, p. 273) we noted that a joint committee composed of members of the CBA Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee and the Family Law Council began to investigate the advertising of divorces for $85 by the Divorce Services of Colorado. The CBA joint committee has since filed suit against Divorce Services of Colorado. Ronald I. Zall, chairman of the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, has requested publication of the district court final order in the "$85 divorce" case, wherein the CBA was ably represented by Jerry N. Snyder and William P. Waggener. This final order is presented below:

1. Divorce Services of Colorado shall furnish the following legal warning to all its potential customers before the potential customer pays any money to Divorce Services or agrees to use Divorce Services of Colorado.

LEGAL WARNING

To qualify for a divorce in Colorado (technically called a dissolution of marriage), you must be a resident and domiciled in Colorado at least 90 days prior to the commencement of the action. Divorce Services of Colorado is a public scrivener which only types papers for people involved in a non-contested divorce and who are in basic agreement as to the divorce, child custody, and distribution of property.
