Late last winter a Liaison Committee was established consisting of representatives of the Probate and Trust Law Section and the Colorado Inheritance Tax Division. The purpose of the Committee was to provide a regular forum in which the Section and Division could candidly discuss matters and problems of mutual concern. The Division was represented on the Committee by Steve Berson. The Section was represented by Ned O'Brien of Colorado Springs, and Bill McGehee and Dick Hopper of Denver.

The Committee has met quarterly since its inception, and some very interesting and useful discussions have been generated. Some of the topics discussed have been relatively limited in scope. For example, the Committee has proposed Bar-sponsored legislation to eliminate the notary requirements on inheritance and gift tax returns. Also, the Committee has reviewed procedures for expediting safe deposit box inventories in the case of organizational and deputy boxes.

Broader issues have also been discussed. With the cooperation and assistance of the Committee, the Division has prepared the two statements set forth below. The subject matter of these statements---stock valuation and dealing with delinquent estate representatives--- should be of general interest to all of you. The statements are intended to provide information which will permit all of us to do our jobs more effectively.

All Section members who have particular problems or interests in our area are invited to contact one of the committee members. We welcome you to attend one of our meetings and let us hear what's on your mind.

The Committee constitutes an open channel of communication between the Bar and the Division which we believe is vital for nurturing mutual understanding and respect. We encourage your support for and participation in this effort.Steven V. Berson, Director
