The CLE Road Show

788Vol. 5, No. 6, Pg. 788The CLE Road Showby Joan SommerfeldJoan Sommerfeld, Denver, is assistant director for Continuing Legal Education in Colorado, Inc. 789In an effort to better serve the entire state, Continuing Legal Education in Colorado, Inc., last year decided to video tape live programs held in Denver for later presentation in other locations. At this time, there is an active circuit of four cities---Boulder, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, and Pueblo---in which video tape presentations are made on a regular basis. Several other towns are scheduling video programs with varying degrees of regularity, and in all cases the results are gratifying.

Simple economics prevent the regular presentation of live programs outside the Denver area, at least for the next few years. Continuing Legal Education in Colorado, Inc., is a not-for-profit organization and is able to sponsor the number and kinds of programs it does only through the volunteer efforts of local attorneys. These attorneys spend considerable time drafting lecture outlines for the accompanying manual as well as participating as program lecturers. To ask that these volunteers also travel throughout the state with the program would seem an unreasonable demand on their time.

The Video ExperimentAs a result, presentation of programs by video tape was begun on an experimental basis. Early results indicate that the video tape programs are successful and will remain an important part of CLE. For example, Colorado Estate Planning and Administration: 18 months under the CPC was the first program to travel the regular circuit of Boulder, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and Pueblo. In Denver, 427 attorneys were registered for the morning program and an overflow of 181 saw the half-day program by video tape that afternoon. In addition, 86 attorneys attended a video program in Boulder, 66 in Colorado Springs, 49 in Grand Junction and 42 in Pueblo. Since approximately three-quarters of all Colorado attorneys practice in the Denver metropolitan area, a comparison of 608 Denver registrants to 243 circuit registrants gives a rough indication that lawyers in the smaller cities are even more interested in continuing legal education than their metro Denver counterparts.
