Contrary to appearances at times, this section of The Colorado Lawyer is not limited to contributions from the Boulder County Bar but is open to all who wish to express an opinion concerning law, lawyers, this publication or any other topic of general or particular interest.Colorado Revised Statutes 1973It is obvious that if encroachments upon our profession in the future are as substantial as they have been in the past, in a very few years there will be no need of the bar. Hence, this column. It is no secret that title insurance companies have deprived us of a substantial part of our real estate practice. The passage of the Uniform Dissolution of Marriage Act created huge vats in which marriages could be dissolved for as little as $25.00, thus reducing the amount of that kind of work available to us. Now I am compelled to alert you to another area of our practice which will shrink because of the legislature's recent action. That, as many of you have by now guessed, is publication of the 1973 Revised Statutes.

At first blush you may think that the only people who are going to be adversely affected by the publication of these volumes are those who over the past years have held themselves out as specialists in statutory research. It is true, of course, that a person with that specialty was the one who knew that if you wanted to find out about "Animals running at large, unlawful castration of" you would look under Forfeitures and Penalties, this being completely logical if you construe forfeiture strictly and knew there was a penalty for letting animals run at large. He also knew that if you wanted to find out about "Body snatching, when" you would look under the same part of the index and further knew that "Body snatching, when" does not refer to the section of the statutes which tells you when to body snatch but instead tells you what may happen if you do. It was he who knew that it should have been labelled "Body snatching, what if."
