Annual Report of the President

31Vol. 2, No. 3, Pg. 31Annual Report of the Presidentby J. Hartley MurrayThe following is the annual report of the president of the Colorado Bar Association upon completion of his term of office. This report is not so much a statement of the president as it is a report of the activities of scores of able, dedicated and devoted members of our Association. The work of the Colorado Bar Association is, as always, carried forward by the hardworking committees and sections and particularly the chairmen, and by the able CBA staff headed by executive secretary William B. Miller. The retiring president and the entire Association are deeply indebted to these dedicated people.

I can report to you that the condition of the Colorado Bar Association is good. We are a voluntary association and we believe (although exact figures are not available) that some 85% of the lawyers of Colorado are members. The dues-paying membership now exceeds 3,850.

It was my great pleasure to visit each of the twenty-four affiliated associations throughout Colorado. Your new president, Larry Wood, and our executive secretary, Bill Miller, made all of these visitations and frequently we were accompanied by Mary Wood and my wife Connie. It is deemed appropriate to mention the substantial number of positions of great prominence held by Colorado lawyers in the American Bar Association. The influence of these Colorado lawyers is greatly in excess of our proportionate membership in the ABA. Justice James K. Groves is the Chairman of the House of Delegates, the highest office ever attained by a Colorado attorney in the ABA. William P. Cantwell headed the very important Real Property, Probate and Trust Section, and Justice William Erickson headed the Criminal Law Section. William Gaunt, Peter Holme, Judge David Brofman, and a number of other Colorado lawyers hold, or have held, positions of great importance and influence in the ABA. It is indeed gratifying to note

32not only the prominence of many of our members in the national organization, but also that the state of Colorado is recognized as a leader in the nation in judicial selection and tenure, interprofessional...
