19.4 Informed Consent. Mental health professionals are required to obtain informed consent from their clients prior to administering services or voluntarily disclosing information concerning a client to a third party.¹⁷ The client consents to the professional’s conduct, not to the consequences.¹⁸ Generally, the client’s consent does not have to be in writing,¹⁹ although licensure regulations may require written consent in particular circumstances.²⁰
