. The leading case on what is meant by being “hired” in Arizona is Knack v. Industrial Commission.^[81] The worker in that case was in Tucson when he received an offer of employment as a cook for the employer. He reported for his first work assignment at Indio, California; his first paycheck was to be given him only after he had performed services; and his injury took place in Oregon. In opposition to his claim, it was argued that the offer was for a unilateral contract of employment which he accepted by reporting for work in California. That would have made the employment contract a California contract and would have defeated application of A.R.S. § 23-904 (A). The court, however, accepted the worker’s argument that the offer was for a bilateral contract which was concluded when he accepted the position while still in Tucson. The hiring thus was in Arizona and the Arizona statute permitted him compensation under Arizona law.
