12.7.9 Consent. If an employee consents to an alleged defamatory statement¾for example, by requesting that the reasons for his or her termination be published¾then that consent is a complete defense to a defamation claim.152 However, “[a]n honest inquiry or investigation by the person defamed to ascertain the existence, source, content or meaning of a defamatory publication” is not enough to establish consent.153
