A. (§12.2) Administration by MREC

The MREC (Missouri Real Estate Commission) is an agency of the Missouri
Division of Professional Registration of the Department of Insurance (www.pr.mo.gov/realestate.asp). It is charged with "the examination, licensing and regulation of persons and firms who engage in real estate business in this state as a vocation." 20 C.S.R. 2250-1.010. It is important to distinguish the MREC from the MAR (Missouri Association of Realtors®) and various local Boards of Realtors® throughout Missouri. The MAR is a private trade association with affiliated local Boards. While real estate brokers and salespersons must be licensed through MREC, membership in MAR and its affiliated Boards is voluntary. The designation as a Realtor® is only available to members of MAR or an affiliated Board and in accordance with their requirements. Not all real estate licensees are Realtors®, so care should be taken in using the registered trademark in a generic sense.
