10.11 DESIGNATION OF BENEFICIARY ON MOTOR VEHICLE CERTIFICATE OF TITLE

Under section 46.2-633.2, a motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer may include in the certificate of title a designation of a beneficiary to whom the motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer must be transferred after the death of the owner. ¹⁹¹⁰ A certificate of title with a designated beneficiary may not be issued if (i) any owner is not a natural person or (ii) the motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer is encumbered by a lien or security interest. ¹⁹¹¹ If there is more than one owner of the vehicle, both must designate the transfer on death beneficiary. ¹⁹¹² Beneficiary designations may be added, changed, or removed by submitting a completed "Beneficiary Transaction Request," Department of Motor Vehicles Form VSA 18, which must be signed by all owners of the vehicle. ¹⁹¹³ During the lifetime of the owner, the...
