1.4 ELECTRONIC FILING
1.401 In General.
Federal courts use the Case Management/?Electronic Case Files ("CM/ECF") system, with the expectation that all filings are electronic, except as specifically noted and allowed by each court. A single PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records) account gains the account holder access to all federal court documents, but separate CM/ECF accounts must be established in the Eastern and Western Districts. Further, the Eastern and Western Districts have different procedures for obtaining a CM/ECF account. The main takeaway is to give yourself sufficient time before your first case to ensure that you have access to the CM/ECF filing system.
Federal courts have transitioned to Next Generation of CM/ECF (NextGen CM/ECF). See the following paragraphs for information about the transition schedules in the Eastern and Western Districts.
