§ 20.01. INTRODUCTION

The examination of witnesses raises a host of issues: (1) the extent of judicial control over the trial, (2) the proper methods of eliciting testimony on direct examination, (3) the scope of cross-examination, (4) the purpose of redirect and recross examination, (5) the use of leading questions, and (6) the "coaching" of witnesses. There are, of course, many other issues. Refreshing recollection is discussed in the next chapter, while the privilege against self-incrimination1 and the right of confrontation2 are considered in later chapters.
