§ 2.3.18.1 Union Member Rights. Under the Landrum-Griffin Act, union members are guaranteed equal rights to: (1) nominate candidates for union office; (2) vote in elections or referenda; (3) attend union membership meetings; and (4) discuss and vote on matters which come up in membership meetings.¹⁵² These rights, however, are subject to the union's constitution and bylaws.

Although the law guarantees union members the right to vote in union elections, it does not guarantee them the right to vote on a particular question, since the emphasis is on equal voting rights.¹⁵³ On the other hand, if the election involves questions that affect union membership status or rights guaranteed by the union's constitution and bylaws, the union must inform its members of the election and the subject...
